Communities of color continue to experience disparities when looking at quality of life determinants such as access to health care, education, employment, and many more. To address these and other root causes of racial and social inequality in the county’s Black, Hispanic and immigrant communities, the Urban League of Broward County and Hispanic Unity of Florida will partner with the Florida International University’s Metropolitan Center to launch a Broward Equity Initiative – an academic research project that produced two comprehensive reports: The State of Black Broward and The State of Hispanic and Immigrant Broward.

The disparate impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on communities of color underscored persistent gaps in access to health care, education, and employment.
If Broward County, Florida, had a health motto, it would be “collaboration works.” One out of 10 Floridians live in the county, one of the most expensive and diverse in the state. Leaders from government, business, and nonprofit sectors work in tandem to lower barriers to improvements in health, focusing on individuals and families who are working yet unable to afford basic needs such as affordable housing, food, child care, health care and transportation.
The SJRE Committee has centered racial equity and dismantling racism as the focus of its work. Racism is a template for social injustices of all kinds: sexism, classism, homophobia, etc. Racism is baked into laws, interactions, and narratives. Racism is also intersectional - race and gender, race and age, race and disability systematically disadvantage and harm people. The SJRE Committee is committed to co-creating justice in the Broward business community as reflected in its vision, mission, goals & objectives.
